Pilar Soberón García (San Sebastián 1971) is an artist and a professor in the Sculpture Department of the Fine Arts Faculty at the University of the Basque Country (EHU-UPV). Is graduated in Fine Arts, specialising in Sculpture and Visual Art, and has a PhD, awarded cum laude, from the University of the Basque Country for her doctoral thesis In-fluido [In-Flow] (2016). 

Pilar took first prize for New Artists of Gipuzkoa in 1995 and was selected in the XXXVI Fotografía ABC, in ARCO in 2003. She has taken part in international fairs such as MIA Milan Image Art Fair and ArteSantander. In 2014, she was selected to perform an intervention in the public space for Wiesbaden Kunstsommer Festival (Germany) with Aeolia’s Park and she has produced ephemeral installations for Meta-illusioni international exhibition in Naples. She has also interacted in institutional spaces such as the Koldo Mitxelena Kulturuena in San Sebastián or in the Aquarium San Sebastián. As a finalist in Photíssima ArtPrize Venize 2015, she exhibited at Venice, simultaneously to the La Biennale di Venecia 2015. Meanwhile, Aeolia´s Park has been opened in Kurk Park, in Wiesbaden.

In Murgilketak. Viajes de Jung Pilar de-constructed an ancestral hut in the Ganbara Room, in the Koldo Mitxelena. In 2018, she presented the installation of bronze sculptures Great Inversion at the Vanguardia gallery of Bilbao. In 2019, she presented at the Aquarium museum of San Sebastian Uraldia, which reflects on the state of our ecosystem. Currently, she has exposed Hodei putzua. Jardín vertical at the Menchu Gal exhibition hall in Irun. Nowadays, her works had been selected in the Certamen Bienal d’Art Pollensa and in the Bienal D'Art Tarragona. 

Her works appear in the art collections of institutions such as Kulturamt Wiesbaden K.D.ö.R. (Germany), Malaga Provincial Council, Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, San Sebastian Aquarium Museum, Kutxa Foundation and Irun City Hall.

Pilar Soberón (San Sebastián 1971) es artista y profesora adjunta de universidad en el Dpto. de Escultura, en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad del País Vasco. Licenciada en Bellas Artes en las especialidades de Escultura y Audiovisuales, es Doctora Cum Laude por EHU-UPV con la tesis doctoral In-fluido (2016).

Primer Premio de Artistas Noveles de Guipúzcoa 1995 y Primera finalista en XXXVI Premio de Fotografía ABC en ARCO ’03, ha participado en ferias internacionales como MIA Milan Image Art Fair o ArteSantander. Ha intervenido en el espacio público en Wiesbaden Kunstsommer Festival 2014 (Alemania) y ha creado efímeras instalaciones en la muestra internacional Meta-illusioni en Nápoles. Ha colaborado también con espacios museísticos como el Centro Cultural Koldo Mitxelena de San Sebastián o el Museo Aquarium de San Sebastián. Finalista en Photíssima ArtPrize Venize 2015 ha exhibido en Chiostro dei Frari de Venecia durante La Biennale di Venecia 2015.  

Su obra escultórica Aeolia´s Park es parte del paisaje en Wiesbaden, creación site-specific al igual que Murgilketak. Viajes de Jung (2017) de la Sala Ganbara, Koldo Mitxelena. En 2018 ha presentado Alderanzteak en la galería Vanguardia Bilbao y en 2019 en el Museo Aquarium la video-instalación interactiva Uraldia en el contexto del Congreso Change-the-change organizado por AZTI, San Sebastián, y en la Sala Menchu Gal de Irún la muestra Hodei putzua. Jardín vertical con acciones y land art. En 2019 su obra ha sido seleccinada en la Bienal de Arte de Pollensa y en la Bienal D’Art Modern de Tarragona. 

Su obra figura en colecciones de arte como: Diputación de Málaga, Diputación Foral de Guipúzcoa, Museo Aquarium San Sebastian, Fundación Kutxa y Ayuntamiento de Irun.

Pilar Soberón García (Donostia, 1971), artista eta unibertsitateko irakasle elkartua da Eskultura Sailean, EHUko Arte Ederren Fakultatean. Arte Ederretan lizentziaduna Eskultura eta Ikus-entzunezkoak espezialitateetan; Cum Laude Doktorea Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatean In-fluido (2016) doktore tesiarekin.  

Gipuzkoako Artista Berrien Lehen Saria jaso zuen 1995ean eta Fotografía ABC XXXVI. sariketan 1.go finalista izan zen, 2003an ARCOn; nazioarteko hainbat azokatan esku hartu du, hala nola MIA Milan Image Art Fair eta ArteSantander. 2014an Alemaniako Wiesbaden Kunstsommer Festival-erako Aeolia´s Park eskultura landu du eta instalazio efimeroak ekoitzi ditu Meta-illusioni, erakusketarako Napolesen. Hainbat erakunde-espaziotan esku hartu du hala nola Donostiako Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea edo Donostiako Aquarium-a. Photissima ArtPrize Venize 2015 sariketan finalista izanik, Chiostro dei Frari-n (Venezia) erakutsi du, eta aldi berean 2015eko La Biennale di Venecia-n.  

Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunean, Ganbara aretoan artelan galkorra gauzatu du, Murgilketak. Viajes de Jung (2017) erakustaldian. Bilboko Vanguardia galerian Alderanzteak (2019) proiektua aurkeztu du. Halaber, Uraldia bideo-instalazio interaktiboa Aquarium Museoan ikusgai izan da Change the Change Kongresuarekin batera eta Azti-k antolatuta. Era berean, Hodei putzua. Jardín vertical (2019) Irungo Menchu Gal aretoan izan da non ekintzak eta land art bihurtu dira. Berriz, Pollensako Bienalean eta Tarragonako Bienal D’Art Modern-eko finalista ere izan da 2019 urtean.  

Haren obra hainbat erakunderen bildumetan dago, hala nola Kulturamt Wiesbaden K.D.ö.R. (Alemania), Malagako Diputazioa, Gipuzkoako Foru Aldundia, Donostiako Museo Aquarium eta Kutxa Fundazioa eta Irungo udala.

   La artista guipuzcoana Pilar Soberón muestra su obra fotográfica en MIA Milan Image Art Fair en el stand de arteko galería con su instalación MICRO-WORLDS; antesala de una serie de proyectos que basan su investigación en lo científico, lo biológico y lo geológico.

    Pilar Soberón, San Sebastián 1971, artista multidisciplinar interesada en el proceso artístico y la experiencia, presenta sus últimos trabajos en los que se refleja su exploración hacia nuevas formas de vida.  En MIA 2012, Soberón muestra fotografías pertenecientes a las series Disseminations, Aracno-worlds y Bacto-simbiosis en donde la atracción por lo micro, y el poder de reflejar el mundo, se mezclan en diferentes espacios creando anamorfosis.

   Micro-worlds es la antesala de una serie de proyectos que basan su investigación en lo científico, lo biológico y lo geológico: Bacto-simbiosis (2012), Disseminations (2011), Phyloco-ccus (2012), Aracno-worlds (2012) o Nocturnos (2012).

 

    Bajo el prisma de un mundo microscópico surgen cuestiones en torno a los avances y descubrimientos científicos como sucede en Nocturnos (2012). Con la libertad de un técnico de laboratorio la artista explora nuevas formas de vida, nuevos habitats o nuevas orografías; de-construyendo su archivo de elementos naturales, remembrando y recomponiendo fragmentos. 

   Así, los elementos de partida, elementos de naturaleza como semillas, o el cuerpo de la propia artista, son intervenidos, fusionados, y posteriormente reconstruidos, poniendo en relieve el propio proceso y su efímero estado.

   

 Una amplia selección de fotografías en gran formato podrán verse en el stand de arteko en MIA 2012 que cumple este año su segunda edición con grandes expectativas tras el éxito cosechado el pasado año. Ideada y creada por Fabio Castelli, director artístico de Fotografía Italiana, la Feria, está dedicada exclusivamente a la fotografía y al vídeo, y propone la selección de un solo artista por stand. Más de 15.000 personas visitaron en la pasada edición MIA, una Feria emergente que apuesta por la calidad e innovación.

THE OROGRAPHICAL, METAMORPHIC AND POETIC ATLAS, OF PILAR SOBERÓN

    The artist graduated from the Faculty of Fine arts of the EHU/UPV in the specialities of sculpture and audiovisual, going on to complete doctorate courses with Angel Bados and Saturnino Barriuso; however, the time she spent at Arteleku, taking part in important workshops with Eva Lootz, Gabriel Villota, Esther Ferrer and Pep Durán,  and the on-site use of her own workshop, was to be vital for her career in the plastic arts. The years of creation at Arteleku, especially between 1994 and 1996, are particularly relevant owing to the importance of the themes and processes the artist acquired. The period gave rise to the concepts of metamorphosis, mutation and fluid, with aerodynamic and even ethereal actions that are still used by the artist today and are the Soberón mark. 

    Pilar Soberón (San Sebastián, 1971) is a consummated multi-discipline artist interested in every area of investigation and procedure in which the artistic process and experience are fundamental. To express herself, the artist uses photography, performance, drawing, sculpture, painting, prints, video, sound, the wind, the air, aromas,a variety of seeds, as well as her own body as a means of expression. 

    The themes of Pilar Soberón’s work are cyclical and feed on herself, which is one of the most important aspects. Her work is constantly mutating and cyclical, as expressed by the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida in their concept of simultaneous eternal return, repetition and difference.

    Space and the exploration of its limits are fundamental for this artist, who always relates the object of her pieces with the space around them, playing with the spectator, often asking him/her to play a part in the creation of her own work .

M I C R O - W O R L D S

    

     Micro-worlds is the fore-room of a series of projects which base its investigation on the scientific, the biological and the geological.

 

    From the point of view of a microscopic world, questions arise around scientific breakthroughs and discoveries, as is the case with Nocturnos (2012). With the freedom of a of a laboratory technician, the artist explores new forms of life, new surroundings or new orographies; taking apart her file of natural elements, reweaving and recomposing fragments.

   Thus, the starting point elements, elements of  nature such as: seeds, or artist´s own body ,are brought into play,  fused, to be once again rebuilt, there-by putting the very process and its ephemeral state in relief.

    La atracción por lo micro, y el poder de reflejar el mundo, se mezclan en diferentes espacios creando anamorfosis. Una metamorfosis deviene lo vegetal en animal, y lo animal en aislados y frágiles mundos. 

  Partiendo de la observación de los procesos minerales, de los efectos de transición de fase o de la estructura de nuestra composición molecular, surge toda una línea de pensamiento y práctica que se refleja en Aracno-worlds (2012).

  Así, las fotografías se plasman por medio de proyecciones evidenciando la fragilidad del suceso. La ausencia de soporte físico, hace latente su propio ser intangible. 

   A su vez, por medio del cambio de escala nos trasladamos de lo micro a lo macro, adentrándonos en la inmensidad del microcosmos.

    The attraction for the micro and the power of being able to reflect the world, are mixed in different spaces creating anamorphosis. A transformation made from the vegetable to the animal and, from the animal to  isolated and fragile worlds.

    Out of the effects of the transition of the structure of our molecular make-up comes a line of thought and practice that immerses us in the immensity of the cosmos.

    The discovery of  changes of state such as; the effects of the transition of  phase or the organic micro-structures  repeating themselves like the fractals of the universe, appear in this line of scientific and biological projects, like Aracno-worlds (2012).

    Thus the biological unites with the poetical, the micro-cellular aspect with the night, bringing about chance encounters.

    Como un biólogo-geólogo Pilar Soberón captura y archiva. Ya lo decía Susan Sontag que el auténtico coleccionista no está atado a lo que colecciona, sino al hecho de coleccionar . 

    De sus archivos nace una obra en constante mutación. Todo se presta a una constante metamorfosis, a un constante cambio. Concepto éste que junto al de fluidez acompaña a todo el proceso creativo de esta artista. La preocupación por la genética, la biología o la clonación son cuestiones que surgen y afloran en todo el proyecto de Simbiosis (2012), proyecto en desarrollo.

    En Bacto-simbiosis (2012) se muestra el archivo de organismos capturados, es el archivo de un biólogo, mientras que en Sinergias (2012) el archivo da un paso más hacia la mutación hacia lo biomórfico.

    As if a biologist-geologist, Pilar Soberón captures and saves. As said by Susan Sontag, the true collector is not tied to what is collected, but to the fact of collecting. Out of her files is born a piece of art in constant mutation. All in it lends itself to constant metamorphosis, to constant change. This concept, together with that of fluidity, is the creative process of this artist. The concern for genetics, biology and clonation are questions which appear and emerge throughout the project Simbiosis (2012), a project fully underway.

      We are fluid and as such do we behave, we are made up of 80% water; as we grow we discard some of this.

    

    Nevertheless, as Gaston Bachelard describes, we absorb the night thanks to that in us which is water. This is one of the principles which underlies the project Nocturnos (2012).

  Somos fluido y como tal nos comportamos, estamos constituidos por un 80% de agua, a medida que crecemos nos desprendemos de parte de ella.

   
   Sin embargo, tal y describe Gaston Bachelard, absorvemos la noche gracias a lo que existe en nosotros de hídrico. Éste es uno de los principios que se hace latente en el proyecto Nocturnos (2012). 

    El descubrimiento de los cambios de estado como los efectos de la transición de fase, las microestructuras orgánicas que se repiten como los fractales en el universo, se hacen presenten en esta línea de proyectos científicos, biológicos, como Bacto-Simbiosis (2012), Gélidas (2010), Phylococcus (2012) etc. Así lo biológico se une a lo poético, el aspecto micro-celular a la noche, creando una suerte de encuentros.

D i s s e m i n a t i o n s   (2011)

   Disseminations  (2011) introduces us into a biomorphic universe, which, as if a huge fragmented map unfolds itself in space. From the universe of the micro it delves into, not only the hyper-sensitive but also into the cognitive and scientific aspects; felt or forebode. The thistle-flower seeds, flying seeds, which, when installed on the wall and on the artist´s own body, make up a new orography fusing the anthropomorphic and the geologic, creating a new orographic projection.

D I S S E M I N A T I O N S    P R O Y E C T

DISSEMINATIONS  continúa en proceso y se disemina en Italia. DISSEMINATIONS PROJECT claims the spectators involvement, beyond a merely normal mental interpretation. The artist Pilar Soberón has arranged more than a hundred boxes with their mysterious thistle flowers so that the public can experiment on the piece and create their own videos and pictures, which later will go on the artist blog, As Gerardo Elorriaga comments, apart from the invitation to this game, the initiative calls into question categories and roles. The artist says: .  DISSEMINATIONS PROJECT artelanak, betiko adimen interpretaziotik haratago, ikuslearen parte-hartzea eskatzen du. Pilar Soberón artistak ehun kutxa prestatu ditu bere hazi misteriotsuez beteta ikusleek parte har dezaten, lanarekin esperimentatuz, bideo eta argazkiak sor ditzaten. Gero, artistaren blogean ikusgai izango dira. Jolaserako gonbidapenaz gain, ekimenak artearen rolak eta kategoriak zalantzan jarri nahi ditu. “Artista munduaren zilborra onartua ideia baztertu nahi dut, eta MIA Milano Image Art Fair 21012-ra inguratzen denari sortzeko aukera eskaini nahi diot, bide batez, artelana bera, espazioan zehar barreiatzen dela”, dio artistak.

Disseminations project reclama la participación del espectador, más allá de la mera y habitual interpretación mental. La artista ha dispuesto de otras cien cajas con sus misteriosos vilanos para que el público pueda experimentar con la pieza y cree sus propios vídeos y fotografías, que luego son incorporados al blog de la autora. Además de una invitación al juego, la iniciativa cuestiona categorías y roles. Así la artista afirma" quiero desprenderme del concepto de artista cómo ombligo del mundo, y ofrecer la posibilidad de crear también a quién se acerque a MIA FAIR, al tiempo que la obra se disemina en el espacio. Todos los interesados pueden recoger su caja en arteko galería, en el stand 12 de MIA o solicitarla vía mail.
